ASHLEY, Frank Merwin Born 1867, Worked New York USA. Designer of ‘Gem’ and ‘Gala’ patent violins in New York c.1924. Trained as a mechanical engineer. Attorney and Counsellor in Patent Causes at New York 1924. Inventor of new shape violins named 'Gala' and 'Gem', made with bent rather than carved back and front plates, and one-piece guitar-shaped ribs.
