By John Dilworth

TOURTE, Charles Born circa. 1770, d. before 1816 Paris France. Son and pupil of Nicolas Léonard Tourte, below. His contribution to the output of the Tourte workshop is not easily assessed. Very few examples of his work are known, and as many later Mirecourt bow makers were to do, he added his wife’s initial, ‘T’, for her maiden name Toupot to his own brand. It is assumed that spouses of bow makers were closely involved in dressing the hair and other aspects of the craft. Known work is very modern in appearance, with closed frog and incambered stick. Branded: TOURTE.T [Millant/Raffin]
