ATKINS, John Born 1848 Chippenham, Wiltshire, Worked from 1908, died 1919 Sheffield UK. Engineer. Amateur violin maker and collector in retirement. Opened a professional atelier in his last years, but died suddenly. Limited output, including one full quartet, showing good craftsmanship but unrefined stylistically. Rather meagre locally sourced materials and unattractive varnish. Branded under endpin: ‘J. Atkins, Sheffield’. Printed label: Made by / J. Atkins / No. 9 1913
