By John Dilworth

ANTONY, Johann Worked circa. 1775-1785 Mittenwald Germany. Small pointed corners. Slender oval scroll, deeply undercut. Dark golden-brown varnish. Italianised his name on labels, and mischievously gave Cremona as his origin on some; hence the fictitious ‘Hieronymus Antonij’ who appears in several dictionaries as a Cremonese maker of the 18th century. Johann Antony / Violinmacher, Mittenwald Hieronimus Antonij / Cremonae anno 1751
