ALDRED, Thomas Worked 1612-1639 Holborn, London UK. Viol maker known chiefly from the remark in Mace’s Musick's Monument (1676): 'Of such viols there are no better in the world than those of Aldred, Jay and Smith'. No known instruments survive, but other contemporary references include the will of one Simon Ives in 1662 which lists a chest of nine viols by ‘Alred’.
