James W. Robinson, Luthier

James Robinson studied violin making in Cremona, Italy with Gio Batta Morassi, Pietro Sgarabotto and Francesco Bissolotti. Part time, he also worked as an assistant to Stefano Conia. After finishing the school in Cremona he moved to London and got his first violin shop job at the famous firm of Ealing Strings with Malcolm Sadler, James Black, Alan Mann and Brian Parkinson all of whom had come from the firm W.E. Hill & Sons. Later, he was a founding partner of the firm Cranston Workshop on Portobello Road in London along with Adam Whone, Martin Godliman and Paul Ayers. Since then he has worked at a number of well known violin shops including Jacques Francois Rare Violins and with Mosa Havivi in New York City, Johnson String Instruments in Boston, with Paul Schuback in Portland, Oregon and with Yuko Kanda at Kanda & Co. in Tokyo among others. James has made over 250 instruments and has won three awards for craftsmanship judged by the eminant Charles Beare. In Sydney, James does restoration work for local and inter-state clients as well as making new instruments. In Sydney, he is also offering training in Restoration and Making.
