By John Dilworth

WRIGHT, Joseph c.1790 Derby UK. Henley seems to suggest disingenuously that these are violins painted and decorated by the artist Joseph Wright of Derby, whose familiar motto is quoted. There is no independent support for this, from academic institutions or archival research. Almost certainly a fraudulent later enhancement of factory instruments. Inscribed at bottom of back: ‘Delineata a Josepho Wright anno Aetatis, suae 16..’
