WILLIAMSON, James Born 1854 Lerwick, Shetland Islands UK, Worked circa. 1906-1925 Wellington New Zealand Self-taught from early youth. Emigrated to New Zealand 1875, initially in Fielding, later established as a cabinet maker in Wellington c.1906-1925. Became a full time violin maker in retirement. Stradivari and Guarneri derived models. Excellent workmanship using local woods: figured Kauri used in place of maple. Pale golden-yellow spirit varnish.
