By John Dilworth

VOLL, Jacob Born 1803, died 1854 Mainz Germany. Self-taught initially. Subsequently gained experience in a commercial violin making company, and from there went to Vienna and Paris. At this time the Diehl brothers were dominant in Mainz, so he moved to Frankfurt to establish his own business (Steininger had left that city for St Petersburg in 1835). However, violin labels from Mainz are recorded from 1836, and he was married there in 1840. Retired from violin making 1842 to become a railway overseer, possibly as a result of the crisis of the early death of his wife in 1843. Very fine and accurately finished work on well-observed Stradivari model. Beautifully concentric and well-balanced scroll in Stradivarian style; chamfer is a little weak. Fine orange- or red-brown varnish and first-class materials. J. Voll / in Mainz 1836 J. Voll / in / Mainz 1837 Jacob Voll / in Mainz 1841 J. Voll Geigenmacher / in Mainz 1847 [Michels]
