VÁVRA, Josef Born 1912 Prague, died 1998 Luby (Schönbach) Czech Republic. Nephew of Jan Baptista Vávra, above, and pupil 1927-1931. From 1934 worked for his cousin Alfons, above, in the Jindrisska shop. Moved to Luby 1945. Also taught at the Cremona International School of Violin Making to 1969. Prizes awarded in Prague 1954, Poznan 1957, and Liège 1960. Founding member, with his cousin Karel, of the Czech Kruh Umelcu Houslaru (Association of Violinists and Violin Makers). Over 350 instruments, including four quartets, fifteen violas and five cellos. Usually Guarneri models, but some Stradivari patterns also. Golden-yellow or red-brown spirit and oil varnish.
