THOMASTIK, Franz Worked circa. 1912 Holesovice Czech Republic, Worked from c.1919 Vienna Austria. Anthropologist and violin maker in Vienna. Developed many original ideas for violin form and function. Exhibited quartets in Vienna, Munich, Wroclaw (Bresslau) and elsewhere around 1920. In 1919 he met Otto Infeld and together developed the ‘precision steel strings’ for which the present company ‘Thomastik Infeld’ is famous. Innovative string and accessory makers still active in the present day, run by Peter Infeld, son of Otto, until his death in 2009.
