STEINER, Jacob Erasmus c.1642-1650 Bolzano, Absam Germany & Cremona Italy. Henley gives a very elaborate and fanciful biography of the son of James Stuart McDonald, who apparently was exiled from Scotland and married the daughter of an industrialist, Count Steiner. He assumed the German name, but was known as Schotte. Became a soldier, was wounded in battle, and taken in by the Albani family, whose daughter he also married. Established in Absam in 1642 and in Cremona c.1650. Produced a large number of instruments, but eventually took his own life. None of this is confirmed in any other source, nor by any known research. Work unverified. Almost certainly a fabricated label.
