SABINARZ, Valentin Isidor Born 1893, died 1987 Mainz Germany. Cellist. Introduced to violin making whilst a prisoner-of-war in Toulouse, his first violin and only double bass dating from 1917. After World War I continued as a musician, but in 1934 economic pressure drove him to establish a workshop in his home at 1b Neutorstrasse, Mainz. Joined by son Richard, above, in 1947 and the workshop grew in importance. After son’s death son in 1981 assisted by E. Sticht and R. Wolf. Stradivari model. Golden brown or occasionally red-brown varnish. Manuscript label. [Michels]
