MEISSNER, Henry Born 1910 Denver, Colorado, Worked from 1975 Carpentaria, California USA. Brought up in Germany but returned to the USA 1925. Travelled with an evangelical choir. First violin made in Oklahoma City. Settled in California; in Redlands c.1950, then from 1975 in Carpentaria. Assisted by his son Henry (II). 188 instruments completed, including 25 violas and two cellos. Classical Italian violin models; Tertis and Brescian model violas. Also a personal design for violin with substantially reduced upper bouts. Sometimes used pre-cut necks. Terpene-resin varnish. [Wenberg]
