McGEORGE, John Born 1808, d. before 1851 Edinburgh UK. Recorded as a ‘furniture broker’ in Edinburgh directories at 20 Union Place 1838-1845, but referred to as ‘violin maker’ in other documents. Presumed to be a pupil of Matthew Hardie. His work is rarely identified but very sophisticated, in the Hardie style. Stradivari model. Dark red-brown varnish. Inscribed: ‘John McGeorge Fecit 1835’ [Rattray]
