HORNSTEINER, Johann (III) Born 1862 Mittenwald Germany, died 1952 Chicago, Illinois USA. Studied in Mittenwald under Joseph Kriner. Worked in Frankfurt for Friedrich Edler and in Berlin with Mathias Neuner. Emigrated 1890. Established in Chicago forming Adler & Hornsteiner with Max Adler up to c.1896. Simultaneously worked for Lyon & Healy before setting up his own shop 1908. This business was purchased by Rudolf Wurlitzer in 1931 after which Hornsteiner ceased making and worked in repair and restoration, latterly for Kenneth Warren from c.1946 until his death. More than 300 violins, a few violas and cellos; mostly on Golden Period Stradivari model; some Guarneri patterns. Thick yellow varnish, often on plain materials. [Wenberg]
