HINCHCLIFFE, John Wesley Born 1868 Toronto, Worked from 1888 Ottawa Canada Pupil of J. B. Squier in Boston. Established independently in Ottawa from 1888. Prolific maker. Credited with 530 violins, 50 violas, 80 cellos, 12 double basses, and 150 guitars and mandolines. Best grade ‘Artist’ violins made on Stradivari ‘Alard’ violin, Guarnerius, Nicolò Amati, and Vuillaume models. Developed and retailed his own oil varnish.
