HILL, Archibald S. Born 1882 Ballarat Australia, died 1972 Yakima, Washington USA. Violin and bow maker, active in the USA from 1893. Trained in Chicago, New York, and Toronto, where he was associated with Joseph Hugill. Established independently in Seattle, Washington c.1922, and finally settled in Yakima 1960. Generally a small Guarneri model with pale amber to deep red shaded varnish and antique finish. 79 instruments completed. Fine bows on French models, round and octagonal sticks, branded: ARCHIBALD S. HILL A. S. Hill, Liutajio / Seattle. U.S.A. / Anno Dom. 1925
