HAMILTON, John Born 1817 Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, Scotland UK. Textile worker and violin maker, possibly influenced by Alexander Hardie of Stonehouse. According to his labels, made well over 100 instruments. Very competent clean workmanship. Charming Amatisé model with extended soundholes. The nicks of which are long, but only cut into the upper surface of the table. Very pleasing golden-orange varnish, but materials not of the best. Painted purfling. Manuscript label: John Hamilton, Maker / Stonehouse no 106 [Rattray]
