By John Dilworth

GUILLAMI, Juan (I) Born 1702, died 1769 Barcelona Spain Very fine maker. Slender outline, somewhat Neapolitan, with long, rather straight ‘c’ bouts. Similarly long slender soundholes, set quite upright. Amatisé arching, a little pinched. Head also recalls the best work of the Gaglianos, with a long pegbox and small neat volute. Often the chamfer is picked out in black, like those of Stradivari. Very fine oil varnish of a watery-red shade. Sometimes branded on interior near soundpost. Printed label: Joannes Guillami me / fecit en Bar: anno 1760 Joannes Guillami me fecit /en Barcelona 1742
