GATTO, Andrea Worked 1665-1679 Turin Italy. Interesting and rare maker of the early Turin school, influenced by northern European styles: ribs set into the edges of the back in the manner of early Dutch, English, and Germanic makers. Elegant outline, Amatisé form with extended slightly hooked corners. Count Cozio de Salabue describes a viola with high arching, flat in the centre, imprecise purfling, large and long soundholes, back without figure, and a fair tone. Andrea Gatto / Torino 1669
