CARR, John Born 1839 Spittal, nr. Berwick-on-Tweed, died 1918 Falkirk, Scotland UK. Taught by his father George to make and play the violin. Also taught by Robert Harvie and James Thomson. Opened a music shop in Falkirk 1885 and taught and composed for the violin. Made approximately 60 violins, six violas, four cellos, and three double basses. Stradivari model, using Whitelaw's varnish with red-brown or golden yellow colour. Frequently used pre-carved scrolls imported from Germany. His double basses lack the conventional cant in the upper back, making them rather awkward in use. Teacher of John Smith, later of Winnipeg, Canada. Branded on back: 'J. Carr’.
