He was born on June 6, 1847, at Tansley, near Matlock, Derbyshire, and is the son of Thomas Calow, who was also an occasional violin-maker. He makes violins, violas, and double-basses on the Guarnerius model, and repairs extensively. He is assisted by his son Thomas, but the greater part of the work is personal. He uses oil and spirit varnishes. Colours : orange and nut-brown. His double-basses are well made, and possess a large and fine tone. Facsimile label : —
