BALDANTONI (BALDONI), Dante Born 1868 Numana, Ancona Italy, died 1918 Buenos Aires Argentina Emigrated to Buenos Aires c.1900. Self-taught, but reputation sufficient to receive commissions from Kubelik and Von Vecsey. The Kubelik violin was a copy of the Stradivari ‘Emperor’ violin. Also worked on the 1717 Stradivari ‘Emperor’ model, copies of Carcassi, and his own personal design. Good workmanship, sometimes using native South American wood. Distinctively used an external mould (which results in tapering rib corners) and ebony purfling. Full arching and fine, red-brown spirit varnish.
