While good news is generally in somewhat short supply, it is heartening to see a brand-new professional chamber orchestra, named Són, step up for its first concert. Under the artistic directorship of conductor Robin Browning and associate director violinist Anca Campanie, the Southampton-based Són is to give its inaugural performance this weekend.
The orchestra has divided its activities into three interconnected areas: stage, education and masterclasses, declaring on the website: ‘Each project area feeds into the other. We link our professional concert series with associated education projects – uniting youngsters with those at the top of their game. Likewise, we think long-term about a child’s future musical ambitions, nurturing their progression and growth, ready to introduce them to masterclasses as soon as they’re ready.’
Sibelius Unwrapped will take place at the Turner Sims Concert Hall in Southampton on 29 November at 3pm. David Owen Norris will serve as presenter and pianist, exploring the works of the great Finnish composer in his 150th anniversary year in depth before the performance of four of his works with Browning conducting. And there’s complimentary tea and cake in the interval. More details and booking here.
